One of my favorite short stories by Italo Calvino:

In Ersilia, to establish the relationships that sustain the city’s life, the inhabitants stretch strings from the corners of the houses, white or black or gray or black-and-white according to whether they mark a relationship of blood, of trade, or authority, agency. When the strings become so numerous that you can no longer pass among them, the inhabitants leave: the houses are dismantled; only the strings and their supports remain. From a mountainside, camping with their household goods, Ersilia’s refugees look at the labyrinth of taut strings and poles that rise in the plain. That is the city of Ersilia still, and they are nothing.

They rebuild Ersilia elsewhere. They weave a similar pattern of strings which they would like to be more complex and at the same time more regular than the other. Then they abandon it and take themselves and their houses still farther away.

Thus, when travelling in the territory of Ersilia, you come upon the ruins of the abandoned cities, without the walls which do not last, without the bones of the dead which the wind rolls away: spiderwebs of intricate relationships seeking a form.

I'd like to execute something similar to this wall piece in the future for a work area, although my latest obsession with color control says spray paint them! I'm in the process of finding an apartment in Brooklyn which has led to multiple visits into the big city meeting with landlords, lease-holders and brokers in hopes to find a decent place to set up shop before my first semester begins in September. Even though I have a few more weeks to snatch something up I feel like the absence of a living space is a huge weight on my shoulders. Next time I venture underground into the subway I'm going to try to feel like Natsumi in this daily levitation photograph. I wonder how many times she had to leap through the turnstile before getting it right.

So I remember reading about the Rainbow Parade that took place in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn this past April but it wasn't until recently that I discovered the woman behind it, Jessi Arrington from Lucky So and So.

Yup, that's her in the front, leading everyone in chromatic order on her birthday! This picture brings a huge smile to my face and it makes me even more excited to move to Brooklyn. Jessi is a thrifty gal and blogs about her scavenging adventures on her outfits page—They're so much fun!

I'm the type of person that prefers to limit the amount of technology in my possession for fear of getting too attached or reliant on such tools. I'm moving to Brooklyn, NY at the end of the summer for grad school and after visiting NYC a number of times within the past several months, I'm finally realizing the benefits of having a smart phone in an unfamiliar city. Writing down the train schedules and directions to every possible place I plan to visit before my departure is time consuming and not having access to a map or subway directions makes it difficult to navigate. This is why I finally purchased an iphone. Although it makes me feel a little less "human" having all of these smart phone super-powers at my finger tips, there has been an app that I've taken a liking to designed by one of my favorite blogger/designers, Tina Roth Eisenberg from Swiss Miss.

It's called Teux Deux, a to-do application that's simple and functional, conveniently sliding the unchecked items on your list to the following day until they're complete—Such a simple feature but it makes all of the difference!

I recently came back from Pittsburgh where I spent time with one of my best friends in the whole wide world, Miss Stefanie Moser. This lovely lady is the maker of beautiful hula hoops and never ceases to amaze me with her incredible hooping skills—seriously, she's incredible! A dear friend of mine recently reminded me of a day we shared together 5 years ago in Orvieto, Italy—Pasquetta. The day after Easter (Pasqua) is the Italian holiday Pasquetta which roughly translates as "little Easter". We were 17 ladies, living in a 13th century convent in the inspiring city of Orvieto studying art, history, language and culture. We were invited by a dear Australian couple to spend Pasquetta picnicing at their villa situated among the numerous vineyards and olive tree orchards we admired from the convent windows. We hiked to their villa, laid down blankets among their olive trees and spent the entire day eating, laughing, napping, exploring and drinking wine from their vineyard as we gazed at the city we called home in the distance. Many of us, including myself will admit that Pasquetta was truly one of the happiest days we have ever experienced and a perfect illustration of our time in Orvieto.

It's been 46 days since my last post. I was chatting with a friend on the phone the other day and she said, "So... I noticed that you haven't updated your blog in a LONG time". I just laughed because it's not that I haven't been thinking about my blog, it's just been one of those things on my mental list that simply hasn't made the cut! I have to attribute my tardiness to my tendency to procrastinate the things in my life that should get done but aren't life or death. This has been one of them.

A lot has happened since my last post. Despite today's flurries the weather has warmed, spring has finally arrived and I've been training/running in my vibrams. This past winter has left me craving the sun and spending time outside these past few weeks has been so satisfying and uplifting. I also attended bee keeping school and just recently started helping out a maple farm during sugaring season! I had the privilege of spending a day last week collecting sap, boiling and bottling my own syrup, and loved every minute of it. And online shop renovations! Lots of new product photography and plenty more to come.

Here are a few books I've been excited about! I haven't gotten to Michael Pollan's A Place of My Own yet but I have a feeling it's right up my alley. Today I'll share my latest infatuation for writer's sheds. These teeny tiny inspiring spaces make me want to build! I love working with wood and a project like this might be the perfect way to test my ability to build something that could actually be inhabitable...

I need a rug. Now these ones from Anthropologie aren't even close to what I'm willing to pay for a 4x6 but I have to admit, they are gorgeous. Especially these first two.

So, what's the plan this weekend? How are you celebrating? With in the past 2 years, I have been either unemployed or employed part time/almost full time. There have been some months where I have had several jobs or gigs going at once and other times where I've had only one or two. This has resulted in an extremely flexible schedule and although that might sound ideal, it can be difficult to to get things done when there's a lack of routine that's found in a scheduled workday. I've become accustomed to working in small bits every day of the week without fully appreciating a weekend off. Slightly shorter work days was certainly a perk but it wasn't until I realized how valuable those weekend days were that I started to establish more routine and discipline into my work week. Whatever you're doing this weekend, even if work is unavoidable, do something out of routine and enjoyable. Even if it's finding time to have a coffee with a friend, going for a quiet run or sitting down with a book you've been meaning to read. Take time off from whatever you fill your week with and feel good about it.

What a snow day indeed. Already a foot down and apparently another foot to come? There's nothing like having a full refrigerator, a warm fire and time do whatever needs to get done—work, exercise, cleaning, organizing... It's been a day of yoga, reading, chatting with friends, sewing, sketching and planning for me and I'm loving it.

Vintage & Wine

Glorious purples and greens! More often than not I find that the color combination brings on flashbacks of the ninja turtle, Donatello (I wish it wasn't so) but when the right hues meet harmoniously I thank God for colors... beautiful glorious colors. Take note of the way the painting above the couch corresponds so well with crate table and wooden floors. What a beautiful, minimal color palette.

Can't believe it's been over two weeks since my last post. It's been a slow start but I'm starting to get back on schedule now that my application for grad school number 1 is finito! Countless hours at Starbucks, countless cups of coffee along with the help of fantastic friends and family that reviewed my essays so many times, they can recite it by heart—what a whirl wind.

A friend of mine introduced me to IOGraphica a few weeks ago. It's an application download that records the movement of your computer mouse over designated lengths of time. The second image was taken with in the last week of writing my application.

Two more interesting applications I've come to appreciate since the app store appeared on my dock a couple weeks ago—Thoughtback and Evernote, both of which are found in the productivity section. Thought back provides and outlet for inspirational thoughts while Evernote serves as the great way to organize images, ideas, lists etc... They're also FREE!

Wow, it's been far to long since my last post. Unfortunately, blogging has taken the back seat these past few weeks while I steadily and exhaustingly work away at grad school applications for next fall. As mentally draining as this is for me right now, it feels so good to be working towards a challenging goal. Things are coming together and I feel like I'm accomplishing things—oh how I love it when i'm productive!

I came across some work by creative consultant, Jessica Thomas—I love the organic nature of her work. Also, these spaces are incredible! I think I need that rug underneath the day bed.

Man, I just can't get enough of reclaimed wood. The old tobacco barns around Connecticut (they're everywhere) taunt me with their beautiful hinged boards that fan out allowing the tobacco to breathe during the drying process. Every time I pass one by I think, what a beautiful piece of furniture that would make!
